This book was originally Solomon Raj's doctoral work under Walter J. Hollenweger at Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham, first published in 1986. This new edition is updated and revised. Hollenweger refers to this study  as "a milestone in modern church history" ...

Raj presents a detailed look at the Bible Mission, and at Father Devadas (1875-1960, but his followers date his birth to 1840) who founded it out of the Lutheran Church. ... Raj's study of Devadas is an excellent example of the kind of careful study that is needed of new Christian movements that are spreading across the globe.

Back cover:
This work is an attempt to critically assess the life and the theology of the small churches in India especially in the Teluguspeaking land of Andhra Pradesh in the South.
For a close examination the author chose the Bible Mission which started as a break-away group from his own Church, the Andrha Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The relationship of these small groups to the mission churches and their appeal to the non-Christians has been a much discussed subject in India in recent times.
